THANK YOU ROCKETS!

Although you came up short in your quest to win a state championship, your accomplishments were everlasting.  As the senior graduating class of 2009, you will be able to walk away with your heads held high as you achieved several significant milestones, which last forever;

  • 2nd All-Time in school history with 71 wins (second only to the 76 wins by the 1994 graduating class)
  • 1 State Runner-Up finish (2005)
  • 3 of 4 Regional Championships (2005, 2006, 2008)
  • 4 District Championships (2005, 06, 07, 08)
  • 3 West Shore Conference Championships (2006, 07, 08)
  • 3 Straight Dover Cup Championships (2006, 07,08)
  • Your presence, impact and contribution to the Bay High School Men's soccer program will forever be engrained in the memories of anyone who ever watched you play. To the return players, the bar has been raised by those who have gone before you. The baton has been passed and it's now up to you to continue writing the history of the tradition, heart and commitment to excellence which this program has been built.  Whatever you do, always remember it's the 'extra' effort (the 'extra' hardwork) throughout the year, and your belief in those around you that makes the difference, and know that as one of the Band of Brothers, you will never walk alone!

MATCH # 23 Bay vs CVCA
    Date:11/04/2008
    Day: Tuesday
    Time: 7:00 PM
    Temperature: 59 at game time
Match Conditions: Cool, some clouds, nice!
    Location: Medina High School Stadium
    Result: Bay (1) - CVCA (3)

    SUMMARY:
Ten minutes into the match CVCA gave Bay a 'gift' that no one thought was possible; an own goal! CVCA's left outside defender turned to play his goal keeper a simple pass, expecting him to clear the ball out of the area; fortunately the ball ran past CVCA's goalie and into the back of the net.  CVCA was stunned at first, but settled down to find their way back by scoring their first goal at 20:18 in the first half when Sr. Matt Mason cracked a goal past Nate McDonald to draw level (1-1) with the Rockets.  Then roughly 6-minutes later, CVCA scored the go-ahead goal off a throw-in which was headed in to put the Royals up 2-1 at the half.

Bay tried to come out in the second-half with an increased tempo in the first 10-minutes; as Ian Munro hit a shot from 35 yards out in the 57th  minute which CVCA's keeper saved.  Aaron Adkins followed up with his only threatening attempt on goal off a re-start just outside CVCA's box as he narrowly missed the upper 90 just off the right goal post in the 69th minute.  The Rockets last scoring attempt, which could have tied the match at 2-2, came when Sr. Captain, Kyle Hyland served a corner kick from the left-side into a 'scrum' of players in front of CVCA's goal box in the 77th minute.  Some how CVCA managed to kick the ball out of the area.  Moments later, Sr. Matt Mason scored his 2nd goal of the evening to send Bay home with a 18-3-1 overall record.

REGIONAL CHAMPIONS - FINAL FOUR!!!

MATCH # 22 Bay vs Lima Shawnee
Date:11/01/2008
Day: Saturday
Time: 3:00 PM
Temperature: 67 at game time
Match Conditions: Cool, some clouds, nice!
Location: Lexington High School Stadium
Result: Bay (1) - Lima Shawnee (0)

SUMMARY:
The Bay Rockets are returning to the Final Four after winning their 3rd Regional Finals in the last four years, by defeating Lima Shawnee 1-0 in Lexington, OH on Saturday.  The boys played an outstanding match as they simply outworked Shawnee the entire afternoon. Although the game winning goal by Ian Munro did not occur until 70:25 had expired, Bay had numerous close opportunities as they outshot Lima 15-3.  In the first half, Jr. midfielder, Shane Williams missed heading a ball past Lima's keeper off a long-throw in by Kyle Hyland in the 1st 10 minutes of the match.  The defense was superb as Bay Goal Keeper, Nate McDonald, was never seriously challenged during the match.

Much of the second-half was played in Lima's end, as the Rockets controlled most of the possession, attacking the box frequently with scoring opportunities.  Kyle Hyland almost scored on a 30-yard shot which struck just below the cross-bar at 63:44, which Lima's keeper was not expecting.  A few minutes later, Aaron Adkins attacked the right flank and went to the end-line to play a precision pass backwards between two Shawnee defenders towards the PK spot, where Ian Munro was sprinting behind defenders to hit a nice one-touch finish shot at Lima's keeper. Lima's goalie made a valent attemtp to stop Ian's shot as he stretched-out across the goal line to get his right hand on the ball; fortunately for Bay, Ian's shot had enough power behind it that the ball rolled over the keeper's hand and across the goal line to put Bay up 1-0.  Moments later, Ian Munro crossed a bar from deep in Shawnees end across the 6-yard box as Eric Linhart made an exciting, acrobatic effort to meet the ball in the air, just re-directing it past the goal post.

The win increased Bay's overall record to 18-2-1 and set-up a re-match of the 2005 State Sem-Final match vs CVCA at Brush High School, where Bay upset CVCA to advance to the state finals for the 1st time since 1994.  This year both teams are 18-2-1. CVCA's only loses coming at the hands of Wheaton Academy (IL) by the score of 1-2, and to St. Ignatius by the same result; while their draw came against Canfield (2-2).  The Royals have been scored on only 9 times and have not been scored on during the State Tournament. The State Semi-Final match is Tuesday, November 4, at 7:00 PM at Media High School (777 E Union St, Medina, OH); winner will advance to the State Finals vs the winner of (Columbus St. Francis DeSales vs Dayton Carroll) on Friday, November 7, at 3:30 PM in Columbus, OH (Columbus Crew Stadium)

REGIONAL SEMI-FINALS

MATCH # 20 Bay vs St. Vincent St. Mary (SVSM)
Date:10/28/2008
Day: Tuesday
Time: 7:00 PM
Temperature: 63 at game time
Match Conditions: Cold, windy w/snow showers!
Location: Rocky River High School Stadium
Result: Bay (2) - SVSM (1)

SUMMARY:
Bay's senior class reached a milestone by winning their 70th match in 4 years, moving them into sole position in 2nd place for most wins during a 4-year period; only the 1994 graduating class (which won 2 State Championships) have more wins with 76.  A tremendous accomplishment for a talent-laiden group of young men.

Bay started off strong in the first few seconds of the match, as Sr. Ian Munro beat SVSM's right outside defender and attacked the flank; Ian crossed a perfect ground pass straight across the mouth of the goal, as Sr. Aaron Adkins made a timely run towards the 6-yard box, to narrowly miss placing his shot in goal.  Aaron gave the fans something to cheer about at 11:03 when he struck a hard shot slightly over the cross bar, only to strike the football cross bar and rebounding back onto the field of play. Late in the first half, Ian Munro received a nice pass from Aaron Adkins, and narrowly missed a laser shot which was punched over the goal post by SVSM's keeper to save a certain goal.  However the defense came up strong when they needed.  Sr. Kyle Hyland, Sr. Sam Ward and Jr. Keeper Nate McDonald closed-down an SVSM attacker during a break-away attempt to thwart a goal scoring opportunity.  Then with 4-minutes remaining before the half,  Jr. goal keeper, Nate McDonald came up with two exciting split-second saves from point-blank range to preserve a scoreless first half.

The second half saw all the scoring.  Midfielder, Shane Williams found his 3rd assist during the tournament, as he found Aaron Adkins wide open; Aaron hit a terrifc shot in the upper 90's over the out-stretched arms of SVSM's goal keeper to give Bay a 1-0 lead which they would not relinquish.  Jr. forward, Dan Spiesz scored the insurance goal off a deflected shot which Sr. Captain Kyle Hyland took on SVSM's goal keeper; Dan knicked the ball into the goal at 69:30.  SVSM's only goal came at 76:44 off a 25-yard chip into the swirling-wind.  Bay returns to the Regional Finals for the 2nd consecutive year where they will face Lima-Shawnee on Saturday, Nov 1 at Lexington High School at 3:00 PM.  Bay improves its overall record to 17-2-1.

DISTRICT CHAMPIONS!

MATCH # 19 Bay vs Revere
Date:10/25/2008
Day: Saturday
Time: 5:00 PM
Temperature: 63 at game time
Match Conditions: Cloudy, Brisk, Windy
Location: Bay High School Memorial Stadium
Result: Bay (2) - Revere  (1)

SUMMARY:
Another classic match-up between two cross-town rivals. Bay won their 4th consecutive Distric Final (19th out of the last 21) which is an amazing accomplishment. It took roughly 10 minutes for Bay to settle in to what they wanted to accomplish against Revere; once they managed to gain possession they controlled the majority of the play especially, defensively as they held Revere to ZERO shots on goal in the first 40 minutes.  The Rockets outshot the Minutemen 13 to 0 in the 1st half, narrowly missing several opportunities where they could have scored.  Finally at 32:58 Bay found their goal as Sophmore, Eric Linhart played an inside pass to Sr. Aaron Adkins, who manage to flick the ball in the air towards the upper 90; Revere's goal keeper tried to punch the ball out, but actually hit the ball into the post deflecting back it into the goal.

The second half saw much of the same type of play from the Rockets as they outshot Revere 10-1.  Bay's second goal came at 65:04 in the match off a series of successful passes resulting in what would be seen as an "insurance goal" which would propel Bay to the Regional Semi-Finals.  Sr. Kyle Hyland initiated a pass off a re-start to Aaron Adkins, who played a perfect pass to Sophomore, midfielder, Alec Petro; Alec then found a seam between Revere's defenders with his own precision pass straight in front of Sophmore, midfielder, Shane Williams who placed his shot past Revere's goal keeper.  Up 2-0 late in the match put all the pressure on Revere.  Revere's only goal came at 74:18 in the match during a counter-attack.  At the end of the evening, it was Bay's defense which continued to step-up BIG, making play after play to prevent Revere from drawing level and sending the match in to overtime. A total team effort, defensively was the difference in this match.

Bay advances to the Regional Semi-Finals for the 4th consecutive year as it improves its overall record to 16-2-1; the Rockets face St. Vincent/St.Mary at Rocky River High School on Tuesday, October 28th at 7:00 PM.

MATCH # 18 Bay vs Wellington
Date:10/21/2008
Day: Tuesday
Time: 7:00 PM
Temperature: 40 at game time
Match Conditions: Cloudy, Cold, Windy
Location: Bay High School Memorial Stadium
Result: Bay (3) - Wellington  (1)

SUMMARY:
On the first bitter cold night of the season,  Bay controlled possession for practically the entire first half, although they had their work cut out for them as the Wellington Dukes gave Bay their best effort to keep the ball out of their net.  It wasn't until 20:06 before Bay found a way to 'crack the back of the net' when Sophomore forward, Jackson Heller made a timely run to the far post in time to one-touch a well played pass from Aaron Adkins into the back of the net to put the Rockets up 1-0.  Five minutes later, Sr. midfielder Ian Munro hit a fantastic shot from 25-yards out from the right side of the goal, diagonally across the box towards the far post, putting ball in to the upper left corner to give Bay a 2-0 margin.  Unfortunately, a late penalty just outside the box, gave Wellington some hope; as they scored on a well-placed direct free kick over a 4-player wall organized by Bay, to bring the score closer at 2-1 right before the half.

Wellington picked-up their tempo in the 2nd half and played with a tremendous amount of heart, as they faught hard to get the equalizer; fortunately, Bay was too much for them as they found the 3rd goal to put the match out of reach at 74:23 on a solid shot by Sr. forward Aaron Adkins.  Aaron found himself near the top of the 18-yard box when a pass from Ian Munro found its way; Aaron was able to position the ball on his right foot just past a Wellington defender, as he ripped a hard shot past the Duke's keeper to put the match out of reach at 3-1. Bay advances to the District Final match, Saturday evening at home vs their arch rival (Revere High School).  Bay improves its overall record to 15-2-1; Bay and Revere had a 0-0 draw in the regular season.

2008 DOVER CUP CHAMPIONS

MATCH # 16 Bay vs Westlake High School
Date:10/11/2008
Day: Saturday
Time: 7:00 PM
Temperature: 67 at game time
Match Conditions: Clear, Damp
Location: Bay HighSchool Memorial Stadium
Result: Bay (2) - Westlake  (1)

SUMMARY:
The Rockets won the Dover Cup for the 3rd straight year against arch rival Westlake High School. This was the 8th year the Dover Cup has been faught over between the two schools. The rivalry has existed since both schools were both members of the South Western Conference.  Although Bay moved to the West Shore Conference a few years back, the season ending match has celebrated the season and kicked off the start of the state tournament.  This year both schools were champions of their respected conference; Bay (a DII team, Westshore Conference Champions, #1 Seed in their District) vs Westlake (a DI team, Southwest Conference Champions, #1 Seed in their District) - both teams finished their regular season with identical 13-2-1 records.

The Dover Cup concludes roughly a decade of competition between players representating both cities who competed against each other throughout their 6 years in the travel soccer program and through 4 years of high school (including various local tournaments over the years).  WELL DONE ROCKETS, YOU HAVE MADE US ALL PROUD!

Match Conditions: Clear, Breezy
Location: Padua High School Stadium
Result: Bay (3) - Padua (1)

SUMMARY:
The first 10 minutes Padua controlled the majority of the possession on their small, narrow pitch; however, once Bay settled in to their game, Bay took over and kept Padua in check.  Sr. Kevin Koch scored his first of two goals in the match after a deflected shot from Ian Munro went to a Padua defender. Kevin managed to strip the ball from the player and rifle-off a strong shot past Padua's goal keeper to put the Rockets up 1-0 22:30 in the 1st half of play.  Junior, Goal Keeper, Nate McDonald made his only save in the 1st half to keep the Bruins out of Bay's goal.

MATCH # 12 Bay vs Youngstown Cardinal Mooney
Date: 9/27/2008
Day: Saturday
Time: 3:00 PM
Temperature: 77 at game time
Match Conditions: Overcast, Comfortable
Location: Mooney Stadium
Result: Bay (0) - Cardinal Mooney (3)

SUMMARY:
Bay traveled to Youngstown for a showcase against #4 ranked Cardinal Mooney; Mooney a perrenial state power was fortunate a year ago when they visited Bay and stole 3-2 match.  This year Mooney came out at the whistle and scored what would later be seen as the critical goal iof the match in the first 2 minutes 14 seconds as they scored during the games first (of many) counter-attacks with several sharp combination passes.  After the goal, Bay woke up and controlled the majority of the possession as they outshot Mooney 9-7 (six of which were on frame) in the first half.  Jr. Goal Keeper, Nate McDonald, made a spectacular shot-stopping save at 38:17 when a Mooney player hit a riveting "point-blank" shot; Nate deflected the shot while an alert Alec Petro cleared the ball out of danger to avoid a second goal right before the half.

Unfortunately, Mooney stepped-up their game in the 2nd half, outshooting Bay 11-2 and scored the insurance goal at 52:48 in the match on what appeared to be a controversial offsides no-call.  Roughly six minutes later, Mooney scored their final goal at 59:43.  Bay hosts Midview on Wednesday.
